Reviving the Spirit of Dussehra: A Journey Within
As the sun drops below the horizon, sending a golden hue over the sky, I am wrapped in the vibrant tapestry of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami. This event whispers stories of triumph, valour, and renewal, stirring something deep inside me. It's an invitation to face my inner demons and emerge victorious.
The delicious perfume of sugarcane and marigold blossoms floods the streets, mixing with laughter and joyful chatter. This year, I went on a one-of-a-kind journey through the layers of mythology, spirituality, and personal reflection that Dussehra represents, rather than throughout India's geographical expanse
At the heart of Dussehra is the eternal conflict between good and evil, symbolised by Lord Rama's victory over Ravana and Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura. These great stories speak to me deeply, telling me that no darkness is insurmountable. As I read these stories, I reflect on the metaphorical Ravanas (रावण) and Mahishasuras (महिषासुर) in my life - those fears, uncertainties, and doubts that stand strong.
Dussehra serves as a promise, a reminder that, with strength and dedication, I, too, might wield the bow of righteousness against my inner demons. The tall and menacing Ravana effigy indicates what needs to be let go. As the flames increase, I see my fears and regrets turning to ashes, symbolising a new beginning.
In Mysore, the Dasara processions include culture, heritage, and art. The great spectacle of the royal parade, complete with elephants, is like a captivating dance of tradition in motion. Durga Puja's throbbing rhythms are brought to life in West Bengal with colourful celebrations. The beautiful workmanship of the idols says volumes about devotion.
Kullu Dussehra's unique practice of taking Lord Raghunath's idol out in a spectacular procession fills the valleys with celebratory music. I reflect on my own hardships and successes while honouring Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. Each variation of Dussehra provides me with valuable insights into my life's path.
As the festival duration approaches, I adore the lavish gatherings and exchange stories over regional cuisines. Whether it's joyful food or brilliant fireworks, I feel a part of a wider community celebrating love, light, and liberation. Dussehra changes into a celebration of the human spirit, a call to go deep into oneself, face fears, and emerge revitalised.
As Dussehra's lively spirit surrounds us, I wonder what inner Ravana you will face this year. How would you represent Lord Rama's courage or Goddess Durga's strength? Tag a buddy who inspires you, and share this post with your loved ones. Let's celebrate our collective win against hardship!
