The Sacred Journey of Ashadhi Ekadashi: A Celebration of Devotion and Faith

नमस्कार मंडळी 🙏
As I sit down to write about the Ashadhi Ekadashi, I am overwhelmed with admiration and wonder. This holy day, which comes on July 17th this year, is very precious to devotees in Maharashtra, and I am pleased to share its tale as well as its significance with you.

Ashadhi Ekadashi, also known as Devshayani Ekadashi, signals the start of Lord Vishnu's four-month yogic rest, Yog Nidra. According to tradition, Lord Vishnu goes to his heavenly abode, leaving the earth in the hands of his devotees. During this time, no auspicious events or ceremonies are held, as the focus turns from material pursuits to spiritual contemplation and devotion.

The Pandharpur Wari, a centuries-old tradition, is an essential component of the Ashadhi Ekadashi festivities. According to one idea, Vitthalpant, the father of the well-known Varkari Saint Dnyaneshwar (संत ज्ञानेश्वर), started it more than 800 years ago. The Wari is a religious pilgrimage to Pandharpur where devotees gather to pay their respects to Lord Vitthal, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu.

As I think about the significance of Ashadhi Ekadashi, I am reminded of my mother and maternal uncle's spiritual journey to Wari last year. Their stories of commitment, connection, and spiritual growth have encouraged me to explore further into the heart of this event. The Wari is a figurative trip that represents the inner longing for spiritual enlightenment.

The duration of the Wari varies, but the core is the same: a collective statement of devotion, faith, and surrender. The trek highlights the power of community and the human spirit, as hundreds of devotees chant, dance, and walk in unison, their hearts full of love and devotion to Lord Vitthal.

As we approach Ashadhi Ekadashi this year, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and happiness. This event emphasises the transformational power of devotion and the need to slow down, contemplate, and reconnect with our inner selves.
