 Morya: Voicing the Mysterious Call Following Ganpati Bappa's Name.

I have always been attracted by the chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya!" that resounds during Ganesh Chaturthi because I grew up in a family that adored Ganpati Bappa. Yet, even though it seemed unrelated to the Hindu deity, Ganesha devotees all over Maharashtra would utter the name "Morya" with great devotion. I started a journey to learn more about the significance of this mysterious call because I was too curious to stop.

According to legend, "Morya" stands for the name of a devoted and obedient follower of Lord Ganesha. He was known for his unwavering faith and dedication to righteousness, and his name came to be associated with the name of Lord Ganesha. As a result of Morya's intense devotion, Lord Ganesha bestowed upon him divine abilities and made him one with God. As a tribute to this extraordinary devotee who united his identity with Lord Ganesha, the chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya" was created.

According to a different theory, "Morya" may have also been derived from "Maharudra," an old Vedic deity connected to storms and thunder. As it represents the combined power of Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva, who are invoked during Ganesh Chaturthi, this adds a deeper layer of symbolism. The word "Morya" is used in the chant as a symbol for the protection, fortitude, and good fortune bestowed upon devotees during the celebrations.

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations have adopted the chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya" as an important part, bringing together devotees in their devotion to Lord Ganesha. It serves as a potent reminder of the strength found in unwavering faith as well as the unbreakable connection between the divine and their devotees. It demonstrates the strength of tradition and the profound significance that has been passed down through the ages.

I feel awe and respect for the ages-old customs and beliefs that inform our celebrations as I consider the profound meaning behind this chant. So, as we honour the divine union between Ganpati Bappa and his devoted disciple this Ganesh Chaturthi, let us immerse ourselves in the spirit of devotion and treasure the story of Morya. Let us collectively chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya!" and allow it to resonate in our hearts and souls, uniting us with God and with one another.
